More About Forest Heights Portland
Forest Heights is one of Portland's largest neighborhoods located on the west side just north of the West Sylvan/Cedar Mill area and south of Forest Park and Northwest Portland. This large community offers beautiful homes built from the 1990s up to today with traditional Pacific Northwest architecture, surrounded by beautiful forests, trees, and views of the Portland Valley area.
Forest Heights was named for its beautiful high vantage point on top of Portland's West Hills. It offers some of the best views in the city. Some say that on clear days you can see all the way to Mount Saint Helens, Mount Hood, and the Cascade mountain range. Develop back in the 1990s, this master-planned community offers a collection of Pacific Northwest architecture and California construction. The neighborhood is unique based on its ample green space, spacious common areas, and elaborate walking paths. Nearly 1/3 of forest Heights is set aside as green space with trails, recreational areas, and natural habitats.
You'll find steep and winding streets adding to the beautiful view homes and while the entire neighborhood is nearly residential, there is a small shopping complex practically in the center of the community complete with a coffee and sandwich shop, pizza restaurant, and the headquarters of the Forest Heights Homeowners Association.
Forest Heights History
Being a fairly young community, Forest Heights, as part of the Portland area, got its start back in the 1850s when the Oregon Donation Land Act opened up land to homesteaders who claim most of the Tualatin Valley. Mill Pond was the original mill Pond for the Jones Lumber Mill and is now a private park within forest Heights. Most of the cedar and oak trees were logged from the land and the mill was sold in 1869 changing hands multiple times until closing in 1892. Over the years, wildfires burned a lot of the West Hills as recently as the 1950s and the idea of Forest Park Estates was formed in 1969 eventually clearing the way for construction of forest Heights Estates, and later dropping the "estates". In the early 1990s, nearly 70% of the lots in Forest Heights were sold and as each phase of the community was platted, builders bid for jobs in a lottery-type system selecting an available lot of their choice. From there, multiple homes were built up keeping a lot of the natural history and forests preserved.

Forest Park Elementary, built in 1998, features nearly 7 acres of buildings and green space perfect for kids through fifth grade. The 3 acre City Park offers play structures at the north end of the school. Residents with middle school and high schoolers typically attend West Sylvan middle school and Lincoln high school, both rated high by parents and students alike. This park features playgrounds, picnic areas, and is the ideal location for community events such as the Easter egg hunt, Fourth of July picnics, festivals, and summer concerts in the park.

The shuttle runs Monday through Friday about every 20 minutes or so and schedules can vary seasonally. Homeowner association dues are around $50 per month but be sure to check with current listings as these fees can change over time.
